How Your Mind Works – Intro to NLP

The mind is complex and it is not easy to explain how it works, yet is not impossible. In order to explain how your mind works, let’s have a look at the study of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) first. This is something that I talk about also in my book Time To Break free that was published last month and is now available on Amazon

What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the study of human excellence. It was created by discovering the minds of great achievers of this world in areas such as Sports, Communication, Business, and Therapy. The people who discovered NLP uncovered the key things these individuals were doing that made them stand out from the rest of the masses. They then modeled and duplicated these key areas of excellence to produce similar results.
By learning the basic skills of NLP, you will gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of how you and others work. This will give you greater awareness over your own life and greater influence in your interactions with others. Let’s break down the acronym NLP further:

  • Neuro: The nervous system, through which our experience is processed via our five senses.
  • Linguistic: Language and other non-verbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered, and given meaning.
  • Programming: The ability to discover and utilize the programs that we run (our communication with ourselves and others) in our neurological systems to achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

A good definition of NLP would be: “NLP is how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

Why is it important for you to understand how your mind works?

There are many geniuses in the world today that cannot teach others what they know.
Have you ever complimented someone on how good they were at doing what they do and they responded by saying, “Thanks, but I haven’t got a clue of how I do what I do? It just seems to come naturally to me.” Or here’s a classic one for salespeople, you ask them “that was a great sales call can you tell me how you got the customer to buy”, and their response is usually, “You know mate, I was in the zone and can’t even remember what I said. You know what, I’ll have to record myself in action and see what it is exactly what I’m doing right.”

Just imagine for a minute that you were able to establish all the behavioural patterns that you run and more importantly, figure out how you run them. In other words, fully understand the order and sequence in which you do things that create results in your life. Now you’ve got a recipe book for your life.

Knowing how your mind works is half the battle because with NLP we’re able to discover all the patterns you run in your mind and how you run them. As a result, we’re able to assist you in changing them.

This is how we’re able to assist many people to overcome their fears forever: by bringing their awareness levels to how it is they are creating their fears, and how they can un-create those fears for themselves. Think about it. If you discover the patterns you run in creating your Phobias and Fears and you know the order and sequence in which you do what you do, then you are in a privileged position to change those patterns and behaviours to run differently. So, NLP is the cutting-edge tool for the 21st century that is used to shift individuals from a state of disempowerment to a state of empowerment.
In other words, you have the ability to think different thoughts from your old ways of thinking and behaving if you knew how your mind works to create a particular desired outcome.

Language is very important in communication. The words we use help to describe internally how we are feeling about a situation or event. The art of language and communication is one that we all must master to be very successful in the 21st century! If you agree with this statement, then follow me through the process of how we communicate language and create meaning for events that happen outside of us. I’m not exploring how we communicate with others here, but I’m expressing to you how you and I communicate with ourselves.
